COVID-19 Preparation

Parent Letter Sent Home March 10, 2020

COVID-19 (coronavirus) is a new respiratory illness we are learning more about daily. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tell us there is no current vaccine. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes it, utilizing everyday practices, such as handwashing and covering your cough.

The CDC maintains schools, in conjunction with local health departments, have an important role in slowing the spread of illness, helping ensure students have a safe and healthy learning environment. Each day, schools welcome students, staff and community members, who share spaces, supplies, and equipment. Therefore, it is important we take steps to help limit the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

To that end, we are recommending the following precautions, similar to flu season guidelines:

  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (or the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice). Hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol should be used if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your nose, mouth, or eyes with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Avoid sharing personal items, such as food and drinks.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue (then discard) or your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
  • Keep your child(ren) home when sick. This includes, but is not limited to, having a fever at or above 100 degrees, coughing, and shortness of breath (per CDC guidelines).
  • Your child(ren) should not return to school until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

We will be monitoring the situation and are ready, if necessary, to implement a series of measures we have prepared in order to keep everyone as well as possible.
