Principal's Message

Bernice Bates
Principal, Woodlawn Elementary School

Dear Woodlawn Families,

We are so glad you are here and accessing the Woodlawn website.  There is no way to include all the great things we have going on at Woodlawn in one page which is why we invite you to follow us on our Woodlawn Elementary School Facebook page.  If you are a parent here at school already, you receive our Remind101 messages that keep you up to date on many of our activities. Also remember to check those weekly parent bulletins that come home from each grade level.

This first half of our 2019-20 school year has already been full of so much learning.  Our students continue to grow with their 1:1 Chromebooks in grades 3-5. We are truly educating digital natives and preparing them for the world they are a part of.  Our teachers use their chromebooks to individualize lessons, to extend the world beyond the classroom walls, and to offer ways to support and enrich our students.

Beyond our school building our students have traveled to learn at pumpkin farms, apple orchards, Marksbury Farm, T-Shirt Garage, downtown Danville, Forkland Festival, Ft Harrod, and JA Biztown.  They have gone to the theater and to the Community Arts Center to learn more about appreciating the beauty of the arts.

We also continue to work on developing character in our students as we focus on ways they can choose kindness.  Students have participated in activities that develop kindness through responsibility and manners with their “Clean Broom” and “Golden Fork”.  They have worked within their classrooms and paired with mentor classes to learn more about how they choose to be kind friends. They have learned about kindness through gratitude by paying honor to our veterans and writing gratitude notes to others in and out of our building.  There are so many ways we are spreading kindness.

Our faculty and students make this a special place to learn every day!
