Junction City Elementary School Designated a Blue Ribbon School

JCES Blue Ribbon

DANVILLE, KY – September 24, 2020 – Junction City Elementary School has been named as an Exemplary High Performing Schools National Blue Ribbon School for 2020 by the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious designation was awarded to only 367 schools in the nation and just five public schools in Kentucky. Though this was awarded in 2020, the status for the school never expires.

"We are honored to receive the award," said Pam Shunk, Junction City Elementary School principal. "It validates the effort that our teachers and students have put forth to improve student achievement at Junction City. I am extremely proud of all of them."

Schools are only eligible to apply for this status once every five years and are chosen based on the school’s performance. Performance is measured by state assessments in reading and math, and the school also must show student growth and progress in these areas.

"I am so proud of the students and staff of Junction City Elementary School," said Mike LaFavers, Boyle County Schools superintendent. "The JCES staff have proven that hard work and passion for what you do create an environment where all students thrive and achieve. The students have shown that a positive attitude and a daily focus on academics result in high performance. I personally consider the Blue Ribbon award to be the most significant recognition a school can achieve. It’s essentially the National Championship of schools."

Unfortunately, due to state and local restrictions on in-person gatherings to quell the spread of coronavirus infections, the 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools awards ceremony will not be held in-person as planned. Junction City Elementary School will be honored during a virtual recognition ceremony on Nov. 12 and 13.
